Spark Plugs — Types, Signs of Failure & How to Buy the Right Ones

Your engine's ignition system runs on spark plugs — small, inexpensive parts that cause expensive problems when they fail. Here's how long they last, what happens when they wear out, and how to buy the right ones for your vehicle.

Three Plug Types — and Why the Difference Matters

Not all spark plugs are created equal. The electrode material determines lifespan, cost, and performance. Here's the breakdown:

Those ranges assume normal driving. Short trips, towing, and aggressive acceleration wear plugs faster. Cold starts are especially hard on electrodes.

Signs Your Plugs Are Failing

Spark plugs wear gradually. You don't wake up one morning with a dead engine — you notice the decline over months:

  • Hard cold starts — the engine turns over longer than normal before catching
  • Rough idle — subtle shaking or hesitation when the car is stationary
  • Worse fuel economy — worn plugs can't burn fuel as efficiently; expect 10–30% worse MPG
  • Check Engine light — misfire codes P0300–P0308 are the most common indicator
  • Loss of power — the engine struggles during acceleration as cylinder output drops

Don't ignore misfires. A fouled plug dumps unburned fuel into the exhaust. That fuel burns in the catalytic converter — one bad plug left long enough can destroy a $600 catalytic converter. A $5 plug prevents that.

Why Brand Matters

Match the OEM specification from your owner's manual — this is the only hard rule. Your manual tells you plug type, heat range, and gap setting. AC Delco for GM, Motorcraft for Ford, Denso for Honda/Toyota. The brand doesn't matter as much as the specification.

Avoid generic import plugs. Inconsistent gap, weak electrodes — I've seen them fail within 15,000 miles. Buy from the major brands and match the spec.

Gap Settings Are Critical

The gap is the distance between the center electrode and the ground electrode. Your manufacturer engineered the ignition timing around a specific gap (e.g., 0.039"). Too tight and the spark jumps prematurely. Too loose and it doesn't fire at all.

Pre-gapped plugs come close — but always verify with a gap tool before installing. It's a 30-second check that prevents a running issue.
