Ceramic pads use ceramic fibers embedded in a non-metallic compound. They're the most popular choice for daily drivers because they produce very little brake dust (keeping wheels cleaner), are quieter than metallic pads, and have less rotor wear over time. The tradeoff: higher cost than organic, less initial bite than semi-metallic.
Semi-metallic pads contain metal fibers (steel, copper, iron) mixed into the compound. They offer excellent heat dissipation for sustained heavy braking, strong stopping power, and better performance across a wide temperature range. Tradeoffs: more brake dust, potentially noisier, and more aggressive on rotors over time.
Organic (NAO) pads are made from rubber, glass, carbon, and Kevlar fibers bonded with resin. They're the quietest and easiest on rotors, but wear faster and can fade under hard braking. Best for light-duty vehicles in mild climates.
Don't wait for the grinding. By that point, you're damaging your rotors as well, which can double your repair cost. Replace pads when you hear the squeal indicator or when a visual inspection shows less than 3mm of material remaining.
